How Do I Check Firewall Settings on Ipad

We are currently in the process of gradually updating all Avast Antivirus users to a new version of the Firewall feature. This article contains information about both the classic version of Firewall and the new version of Firewall.

To check which version of Firewall you currently have, Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.

If you want to immediately start using the new Firewall, you can download the latest beta version of your Avast antivirus product via the Avast forum.

With this update, core Firewall functionality is also available in Avast Free Antivirus. If Firewall is not yet available in your Avast Free Antivirus, you can start using this feature by downloading the latest beta version of Avast Free Antivirus via the Avast forum.

The Firewall feature in Avast Antivirus monitors all network traffic between your PC and the outside world to protect you from unauthorized communication and intrusions. This feature is designed to require minimal input from you. To ensure you are protected, all you need to do is keep Firewall enabled and, when prompted, select the appropriate Firewall profile for each network that you connect to. Firewall is a feature in Avast Premium Security.

Enable or disable Firewall

To ensure your full security, Firewall is enabled by default. We recommend keeping Firewall enabled at all times, unless you need to disable it temporarily for troubleshooting purposes.

To disable Firewall temporarily:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Click the green (ON) slider, then select a time duration.

We do not recommend selecting the

    Stop indefinitely

    option to stop Firewall permanently.

  3. Click OK, stop in the dialog that appears.

Firewall is temporarily disabled. To enable Firewall, follow step 1 above, then click the slider so that it changes from red (OFF) to green (ON).

Define network profiles

This feature allows you to define network profiles based on the networks you're connected to, and monitor all communication between your PC and the web. On the main Firewall screen, every network your PC is connected to is shown under Current network. In the Firewall profile column, you can select the appropriate profile for each network. To manage Firewall network profiles:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Click the slider in the Firewall profile column to select one of the following profiles for each network you're connected to. The following network profiles are available:
    • Private Network: a lower level of security suitable for when your PC is connected to a trusted network, such as your home or work network. This profile enables better connectivity, and permits all communication within the network.
    • Public Network: a higher level of security suitable for when your PC is connected to a public network, such as in a cafe or airport. Because public networks present greater security risks, no incoming communication is permitted when this profile is selected.

Every time you access a known network, Avast remembers and automatically applies the Firewall profile that you previously set. Although you can manage your network Firewall profiles on this screen, each time you connect to a new network, Avast prompts you to select the appropriate profile.

    Public Network

is the default profile setting when no profile is selected.

Manage network connections

The Network connections screen displays a table of information regarding all recent incoming and outgoing communication with applications and processes running on your PC. To access Network connections:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Click Network connections.
  3. From the Network connections table, you can perform the following actions:
    • Tick the boxes above the table to alter the displayed information for each connection. The following options are displayed:
      • Resolve names: shows the host names of network devices rather than IP addresses.
      • Show full path: shows the absolute locations of applications or processes rather than just file names.
      • Detailed view: shows additional columns with details of each recent connection, including the local IP address, local network port, connection state, and amount of data that was sent or received.
    • Right-click any connection to view its Application and Packet rules, or kill the connection completely.
    • Click a connection, then select File details at the bottom of the table to learn more about the application, process, or connection you selected.

To return to the main Firewall screen, click Close in the bottom-right corner of the Network Connections screen.

View Firewall logs

The Firewall Logs screen displays all records of Firewall activity history. You can configure the table to show specific activity, or search for a specific criteria in the table. To access the Firewall logs:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Click Firewall logs.
  3. Search the Firewall logs table with the following tools:
    • Next to Show log for, click the drop-down menu and select an activity type to view either Blocked traffic or Rules in the table.
    • Next to Show for last, define a time frame and time unit to see activities within a specific time period.
    • Tick the box next to Filter, then type your search into the relevant search fields that appear. Each search field corresponds directly to the column underneath it.
    • Next to Clear logs older than, define a time frame and time unit to delete selected log files.

Click Refresh to update the log using your defined criteria. To return to the main Firewall screen, click Close in the bottom-right corner of the Firewall Logs screen.

Application rules

Firewall creates application rules each time an application or process starts for the first time. These rules determine how Firewall behaves toward each application or process when it connects to the internet or to another network. Advanced users can set connection allowances for each individual app to determine how strictly Firewall monitors any incoming or outgoing communication.

To access application rules:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Select an app in the Apps recently managed by your Firewall section, or click Application rules.
  3. Manage the following options on the Application Rules screen:
    • Organize application rules by vendor name
    • Adjust access restrictions
    • Set actions for unauthorized connections
    • Specify authorized ports
    • Access Packet rules

For more information about Application rules, refer to the following article:

  • Setting up Firewall Application Rules in Avast Antivirus

We recommend only changing these settings if you have advanced knowledge of firewall concepts.

More Firewall settings

Advanced users can configure additional Firewall settings by going to MenuSettingsProtectionFirewall. The following settings are available:

  • Disable Firewall: click the green (ON) slider at the top of the Firewall settings screen, then select a time duration. We do not recommend the Stop indefinitely option.
  • Show notification about newly created 'allow' rules: tick the box next to this setting to receive notifications when Firewall allows or blocks a new communication path.
  • Internet Connection Sharing mode: allows a trusted user to connect to the internet through your PC, or to troubleshoot problems with devices, such as a printer that is connected to the internet via your PC.
  • Enable automatic port scan detection: authorizes Firewall to detect port scan attempts.
  • For programs with no defined rules, do the following: use the drop-down menu to define what Firewall does when it detects a new communication path.
  • System rules: click this button to configure individual pre-defined system rules.
  • Packet rules: click this button to configure communication settings according to connection type.
  • List of network profiles: use the drop-down menu in an individual network panel to configure the network profile.

We recommend you only make alterations to System and Packet rules if you have advanced knowledge of firewall concepts. Firewall is already configured to provide the appropriate firewall protection in most cases.

The Firewall feature in Avast Antivirus monitors all network traffic between your PC and the outside world to protect you from unauthorized communication and intrusions. This feature is designed to require minimal input from you. To ensure you are protected, all you need to do is keep Firewall enabled.

Add trusted and untrusted networks

Every time you connect to a new network, Firewall detects if the network is private or public, and automatically applies the relevant settings below:

  • Private networks (such as your home or work network) require a lower level of security, and are automatically marked as trusted. Each time you connect to a trusted network, Firewall permits all communication within the network and applies a lower level of security to enable better connectivity.
  • Public networks (such as in a cafe or airport) present a greater security risk, and are automatically marked as untrusted. Each time you connect to an untrusted network, Firewall blocks all incoming communication and applies a higher level of security to ensure your privacy and safety.

If necessary, you can manually specify that an individual network is either trusted or untrusted by following the steps below:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Select the Networks tab.
  3. Click Show settings next to the relevant network, then choose one of the following options:
    • I trust this network: the recommended option for a private network. When you select this option, the network is marked as a Trusted network.
    • I don't trust this network: the recommended option for a public network. When you select this option, the network is marked as an Untrusted network.

Each time you connect to this network, Firewall applies the appropriate settings according to your preferences.

Manage apps

Firewall controls when the apps on your PC can connect to the internet or to other networks. Firewall creates default rules for an app when it starts for the first time.

To manually specify how Firewall handles connection attempts from individual apps:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Select the Apps tab.

The following options are available on the Apps screen:

  1. Click Block next to an app to ensure that Firewall always stops this app from connecting to the internet or to other networks.
  2. Hover your cursor over the app panel, and click Show more (three dots) to choose from the following:
    • Turn on Ask me Mode: ensure that Firewall prompts you to manually allow or deny each connection attempt for this app.
    • Show app details: view basic information about this app.
    • Show app rules: open the advanced Application rules for this app.
  3. By default, the Apps screen lists only the apps that are currently using your internet connection. To see all apps that are installed on your PC, click Show inactive apps.

Mange blocked apps

When you block an app, it appears on your list of Blocked apps at the bottom of the Apps screen. To unblock an app:

  1. Click the down arrow in the Blocked apps panel to open a list of your blocked apps.
  2. Click Unblock next to the relevant app.

This app can now connect to the internet and to other networks.

View Firewall logs

To view your recent Firewall activity:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Select the Logs tab.
  3. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to specify which activity type you want to see. The following options are available:
    • Blocked apps
    • Blocked devices
    • Applied rules
You can also specify a time period (for example, Devices blocked in the past month).

The list automatically updates to show your chosen data.

You can view additional technical information about a blocked connection attempt by clicking the down arrow on the relevant app panel.

Access premium features

The following premium Firewall features are available in Avast Premium Security:

  • Leak Protection: increases your security on public networks by preventing your PC from leaking potentially sensitive information to the network, including your login credentials, computer name, and email address.
  • Port Scan Alerts: alerts you if hackers or malware attempt to scan your PC for open ports.
  • ARP Spoofing Alerts: alerts you if an attacker attempts to intercept your network traffic via an ARP spoofing attack. ARP spoofing is when an attacker exploits the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) to trick the devices on a network into communicating with an external device that is controlled by the attacker.

To manage the premium Firewall features:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to ProtectionFirewall.
  2. Select the Premium tab.
  3. Select your preferred option below:
    • Enable a premium feature: click the red (OFF) slider so that it changes to green (ON).
    • Disable a premium feature: click the green (ON) slider so that it changes to red (OFF).

Even when Port Scan Alerts and ARP Spoofing Alerts are enabled, they are never active when you are connected to a trusted network. This is because many home security solutions may need to scan for open ports or use ARP Spoofing for legitimate reasons.

When these features are enabled, they activate automatically whenever you connect to an untrusted network. This ensures your protection, while avoiding frequent and potentially intrusive false-positive alerts.
